Fresh Picked VENDOR of the Week: Glacier City Gardener, Robbie Frankevich

Glacier City Gardener, Robbie Frankevich is Following His Passion

On opening day Saturday, May 17, 2014 before Robbie's truck was fully unloaded, you could hear early shoppers say “Oh, thank goodness you are back –I wanted to ask you about…”-fill in the blank  of a hundred different gardening questions Robbie was asked at the Spenard Farmers Market. Whether it’s talking Primula florindae or what it’s like to garden in a Zone 4 maritime climate, Master Gardener Robbie Frankevich willingly and enthusiastically shares his passion.  The Glacier City Gardener is quickly becoming known for his Primulas and has often said, Primula florindae is one of many primroses from the Himalayan mountains that grow so well for us. Not only does it have a beautiful flower that is in bloom for a long time, it can be very fragrant. If the flower doesn't stop you in your tracks with its beauty, the fragrance will.” Robbie came to Girdwood in 1984 and went to work for Alyeska Resort. For the last twelve years he has been the head gardener and grounds supervisor for the Hotel Alyeska. Robbie left the resort to follow his passion for gardening and start his own business, Glacier City Gardener. He lives and gardens in Girdwood Alaska, a Zone 4 maritime climate - lots snow in winter and rain in summer. He is a member of the Anchorage Master Gardeners Association and has managed the grounds department at Alyeska Resort for the last twelve years. Sharing his passion for gardening is what he likes most about being a master gardener.
