The Saturday, August 7 event at the Spenard Farmers Market is "Kids Under The Windmill" KIDS DAY, Celebrating National Farmer Market Week. The USDA declared the week of August 1-7 as National Farmers Market Week in 2010 and what better way to celebrate than being at the Spenard Farmers Market!
Featured free events include the “Spenard Veggie Head” Vegetable Carving Contest and live vegetable carving demonstrations by Nationally recognized food carver, Bang-On Roulet. Roulet, the Hotel Captain Cook Garden Manager earned the grand champion title at the 2010 Las Vegas Culinary Competition, on the Food Network and has been selected to compete in October at the International Fruit and Vegetable Competition in Meaux, France. Featuring Alaska Grown vegetables, the SFM “Spenard Veggie Head” contest has 4 divisions including SFM Vendor, Adult Open, Kids 13 & Under and Professional. Entry forms will be available at the SFM Information booth and vegetable entries must be delivered in person to the Spenard Farmers Market by 1:00 pm, August 7th for judging. Prizes include gift certificates to Blaine’s Art Supply.
Additional free activities on SFM Kids Day include, Blaine’s Make-it & Take-it craft books, SFM coloring pages, Sidewalk Chalk Draw-off, information for healthy eating, keeping kids safe and additional kid friendly information tables and vendors. At the Bosco’s booth, Young Jedis are challenged to destroy the Deathstar! This is a game of skill where those in whom the Force is strong will succeed. Star Wars cards for all successful Jedi.
