SPENARD FARMERS’ MARKET BRINGS FRESH FOOD and FRESH IDEAS TO NEIGHBORHOOD
Community Council Members, Neighborhood Activists Organize Market to Attract New Visitors to Spenard
Each Saturday from 10 am – 3 pm, Spenard Farmers’ Market Organizing Committee invites the Anchorage community to shop the market in the Chilkoot Charlie’s windmill lot on Spenard Road between W. 25th and W. 26th avenues.
Organized by members of the Spenard, North Star, and Turnagain community councils, the Spenard Farmers’ Market (SFM) is a place to buy Alaska grown, caught, and made produce, food, arts, and crafts. Since the market’s inception on Saturday, May 22, market participants have sold fresh-caught seafood, locally produced produce and foods and Alaskan crafts.
“The Spenard Farmers’ Market participation fee is just $10, enabling farmers, food vendors and craftspeople of every kind to participate,” said founding board member Kim Wetzel. “We are incredibly proud to offer this community forum where neighbors meet and have access to fresh, healthy and sustainable products.”
In the initial three markets, community members have snatched up popular products including just-caught shrimp and oysters, fresh greens from the Mat-Su and garden starts from local greenhouses.
Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage provides secure valet bicycle parking for market-goers, encouraging BCA & SFM’s joint values: creating a sustainable community and encouraging healthy lifestyles. The Spenard Farmers’ Market will also welcome Chugach Farm from Chickaloon this Saturday, offering fresh greens, tomato and pepper starts, cellared carrots and beets, compost tea and homemade salve.
